An idea can change when its requirements change. Young Engineer Design Notebook offers engineering design worksheet activities that move from a pretend problem to a first plan, a paper check and an improved design. Every challenge can stay on paper, with no equipment or physical testing needed.
Inside Young Engineer Design Notebook
Ten distinct two-page design challenges move from a pretend problem and stated requirements to a first plan, paper check, changed requirement and improved design. Includes a design cycle, worked reflection and review checklist.
- 10 two-page design challenges.
- 26 pages per edition, including guides and answer or support pages.
- Suggested ages 6-10, with adult support.
There is no single correct design. The notebook provides requirements and reflection prompts, not engineering specifications, tool instructions or evidence that a proposed structure would be safe to build.
How to use this pack
Read the pretend problem and its stated requirements together, then let the child sketch a first plan. Use the paper check to look for each requirement in the drawing rather than judging whether the picture is neat.
Introduce the changed requirement and invite a revision. Ask the child to explain what changed and why, using the worked reflection if a starting point is helpful. The design cycle and review checklist provide a way to revisit the process across ten different two-page challenges.
Worked reflection and requirement-based caregiver checks; no single correct design.
Materials and safe use
Paper, a pencil and optional crayons. Optional construction materials must be age-appropriate and selected by an adult. Every challenge can be completed as a paper design.
These are design invitations, not engineering specifications. Do not build load-bearing structures, use tools, introduce electricity or try strength tests. Follow any toy manual for optional models. Do not move real furniture, use live animals or include private family information.
Your files and printing choices
The download ZIP contains four PDF editions plus a README. Each has the same 26 pages. Choose ONE edition to print:
- A4 Color (210 x 297 mm).
- A4 Low Ink (210 x 297 mm).
- US Letter Color (8.5 x 11 inches).
- US Letter Low Ink (8.5 x 11 inches).
26 pages means pages per edition, not four times that amount of different content. Covers, guides and answer or support pages are included in the page count. The English-language PDFs are printable, not digitally fillable forms.
Open the ZIP, read the README and choose your paper size and color preference. Print selected pages portrait and single-sided. Start at actual size / 100%; check the preview and use fit to printable area if edges clip. You need a ZIP/PDF reader and printer access. Paper, ink and supplies are not included.
Household printing license
