A small piece budget can be an interesting starting point for a drawing. Small Set Building Missions offers printable STEM building challenges that children can complete on paper. Children create plans on a grid, work within a square budget and check where each part belongs. No purchased construction toy is needed.

Inside Small Set Building Missions

Twenty original paper-grid building-plan missions use precise square budgets, position rules and easier alternatives. Includes a warm-up, inventory and reflection sheets, twenty example grid solutions and caregiver guidance.

  • 20 paper-grid building missions.
  • 32 pages per edition, including guides and answer or support pages.
  • Suggested ages 4-8, with adult support.

The twenty missions are paper-grid building plans rather than assembly instructions for a named toy. Optional building pieces or adult-cut tiles are a separate choice, subject to their age ratings and safety instructions.

How to use this pack

Begin with the warm-up and inventory sheet, then choose a mission whose rules you can read aloud together. Mark a plan on the paper grid and count its squares against the stated budget. Use the easier alternative when the full challenge is not a comfortable starting point.

Check positions as well as the total number of squares. Compare the plan with an example solution only after giving the child time to try an idea. Use the reflection sheets to discuss a change or another possible plan; an example is not necessarily the only valid answer.

Twenty example solutions satisfy the stated counts and rules; other valid plans may work.

Materials and safe use

Paper and a pencil. Optional: crayons, adult-cut square tiles or age-appropriate building pieces selected by a caregiver. No purchased toy is needed.

An adult handles cutting. Keep small parts away from children who mouth objects. For optional toys, follow the toy manual and age rating; do not mix magnetic systems or use damaged magnets. Do not stand on, load or climb a model.

Your files and printing choices

The download ZIP contains four PDF editions plus a README. Each has the same 32 pages. Choose ONE edition to print:

  • A4 Color (210 x 297 mm).
  • A4 Low Ink (210 x 297 mm).
  • US Letter Color (8.5 x 11 inches).
  • US Letter Low Ink (8.5 x 11 inches).

32 pages means pages per edition, not four times that amount of different content. Covers, guides and answer or support pages are included in the page count. The English-language PDFs are printable, not digitally fillable forms.

Open the ZIP, read the README and choose your paper size and color preference. Print selected pages portrait and single-sided. Start at actual size / 100%; check the preview and use fit to printable area if edges clip. You need a ZIP/PDF reader and printer access. Paper, ink and supplies are not included.

Household printing license

The purchasing household may print and reuse these pages with its own children. Files and printed pages may not be sold, redistributed, publicly uploaded, or used as a shared classroom or business resource. For use beyond one household, contact WonderKidsToy through the store before copying.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a physical product or a digital download?

It is a digital ZIP of printable PDFs and a README. No physical workbook, toy or supplies are shipped.

Which paper sizes are included, and must I print every file?

Choose one of the A4 or US Letter editions in Color or Low Ink. All four repeat the same content.

What supplies do we need?

Paper and a pencil. Optional: crayons, adult-cut square tiles or age-appropriate building pieces selected by a caregiver. No purchased toy is needed.

What ages is this for?

Suggested ages: 4-8. Ages are flexible guides, not assessments. Adult reading and discussion support are welcome.

Can I share the files or use them for a class?

No. The license covers the purchasing household and its own children, not sharing, resale, classroom or business use.

Will these plans fit my magnetic construction set?

No particular toy-model compatibility is claimed. Every mission can be completed on paper; optional toys must follow their own manual and age rating.
